California artist, Steve Mei, was born in Chicago and schooled in graphic and fashion illustration and design in Los Angeles. Galleries in the Hawaiian Islands and Southern California have carried Mei’s work for years. He is now offering his newest series of temporal, abstract drawings, and tropical deco paintings to the public. Much like the "Plein Aire" painters from the turn of the century, Mei sought out the beauty and atmosphere of rural and natural America.
His temporal and abstract works reflect the feelings and images of his travels throughout the United States as well as his Island experiences.
Mei's years of living on Kauai in the Hawaiian Islands yielded much respect and admiration for the native people and their culture. The representation of that culture in his Tropical Deco series is evidenced in the composition, color and subject matter. In this series he invites you to view the bright colors and bold designs of his highly illustrative style that are at once striking, playful, mysterious and inviting.
His work, which appears in many private collections around the world is currently available through Island Art Galleries with 7 locations on Oahu, Hawaii, Tamarack Galleries in Naples, Florida and A Boy and His Dog Fine Art in Key West Florida. In addition, his work is represented by Dana Ridenour Gallery in Coronal Del Mar, California. Much of his work is available for viewing along with purchase information through rookridgedesignstudio.com.
